Renewed Ambition’s AI Basics · Lesson 1 of 7
Goal: Understand what AI is in plain words, where you already see it, and why it matters for your future.
What AI means
AI (artificial intelligence) is computer software that can do things that usually take human thinking — like answering questions, writing, summarizing, translating, or spotting patterns. AI does not think or feel like a person. It predicts helpful answers based on what it learned from huge amounts of text, pictures, and data.
You already use it
- Maps that find the fastest route
- Autocorrect and word suggestions when you text
- Voice assistants like Siri or “Hey Google”
- Streaming apps that suggest songs or shows
- Banks that text you about strange charges
Why it matters now
Employers, schools, and service offices now expect people to be comfortable with technology. AI tools are becoming as common as email. Learning them now helps you close the gap if you have been away, save time on paperwork, and show employers you can learn new tools.
Benefits for you
- Saves time: a resume draft in minutes instead of hours
- Explains things simply: confusing letters, forms, or terms in plain words
- Practice partner: rehearse a job interview or a hard conversation any time, day or night
- Learning coach: study for the GED, a trade test, or a new skill at your own pace
- Free to start: most tools have free versions — you need a phone or computer and an email address
Try it
- Think of one thing you did this week that used technology to make a choice for you (a route, a song, a suggestion). Write it down.
- Write one thing you wish you had help with right now — a form, a letter, a plan, a skill.
Check your understanding

Predicts helpful answers and can write, summarize, and explain — it does not think or feel like a person.
2. Name two places you already use AI.
Examples: maps, autocorrect, voice assistants, music suggestions, bank fraud alerts.
3. What do you need to start using free AI tools?
A phone or computer, internet access, and an email address.
