Phase One — Pre-Entry Foundation · Module 4 of 24 · 90 minutes

Legal documents, obligations, supervision requirements, and civic responsibilities.

What you will be able to do

  • Identify which legal documents you’re required to carry after release.
  • Understand your supervision terms and reporting requirements.
  • Know your basic civic rights — voting, housing, and employment protections.

Why this matters

Paperwork is protection. Knowing exactly what you’re required to carry, and what your rights actually are, prevents small misunderstandings from becoming major setbacks — with law enforcement, with a landlord, or with an employer.

Reality check: Rules around supervision, housing, and employment protections vary by county and by case. Nobody in this room should rely on secondhand information about their own terms — get it in writing from your supervising officer or attorney, and keep a copy.

Activity

Legal Folder Build — participants assemble (or list what’s needed for) a personal legal folder: state ID, supervision papers, court documents, any restoration-of-rights paperwork.

Scenario

You’re stopped while driving to work. The officer asks for documentation. You hand over what you have and a story — the encounter escalates because your paperwork doesn’t match what you’re saying.

What would you do first?

Reflection

  1. What’s one legal question you still need answered before release?
  2. Who is your go-to contact for a legal question once you’re out?

My action plan (pick at least one)

  • Get your supervision terms in writing before release.
  • Build a legal folder and know where it’s kept at all times.
  • Identify one legal aid contact for questions after release.

Resources

  • National Institute of Justice — Reentry Basics
  • Local legal aid / reentry legal clinic
  • Restoration of rights resource guides (state-specific)

Completion checklist

  • ☐ I know my supervision requirements and reporting schedule.
  • ☐ I have a legal folder with my key documents.
  • ☐ I know who to call with a legal question after release.

Milestone: You can name your supervision terms and reporting schedule without looking them up.
