Phase Two — Community Reentry · Module 15 of 24 · 90 minutes

Handling conflict and strong emotion without it costing you your housing, job, or relationships.

What you will be able to do

  • Recognize your personal early-warning signs of escalating emotion.
  • Practice a concrete de-escalation technique.
  • Understand the difference between reacting and responding.

Why this matters

Conflict is going to happen — with a roommate, a coworker, a family member. What determines the outcome isn’t whether conflict happens, it’s what you do in the first thirty seconds of it.

Reality check: For a lot of people, incarceration required a different set of survival instincts around conflict than community living does. Recognizing that shift — and building new tools — takes practice, not just understanding.

Activity

De-escalation Practice — role-play a house or workplace conflict scenario, practicing a pause-and-respond technique.

Scenario

A disagreement over a shared chore turns into a shouting match in the house. The conflict itself wasn’t the real risk — the reaction to it was.

What would you do first?

Reflection

  1. What’s one recent moment where you handled conflict the way you wanted to? What made that possible?
  2. What’s one situation you know is likely to trigger you, and what’s your plan for it?

My action plan (pick at least one)

  • Identify your top two early-warning signs of escalating emotion.
  • Practice one de-escalation technique until it’s automatic.
  • Identify one person you’ll go to for support when conflict gets hard to manage alone.

Resources

  • SAMHSA — Emotional Regulation & Coping Skills resources
  • Renewed Ambition behavioral health referral partners

Completion checklist
