Phase One — Pre-Entry Foundation · Module 2 of 24 · 90 minutes

Establishing mailing addresses, communication systems, and document management.

What you will be able to do

  • Secure a stable mailing address for the first six months after release.
  • Understand which institutions require a physical address versus which accept a P.O. box.
  • Build a simple system for keeping incoming mail and documents organized.

Why this matters

Your address isn’t just for mail — it’s proof of residence on almost every application: jobs, banking, DMV, benefits, housing. Without a stable one, you’re slowed down or denied before you even start.

Reality check: A lot of people use a friend’s or family member’s address without asking first, or without a plan for how mail actually gets to them. That address falls through in month two, and every piece of mail tied to it — job offers, court notices, benefit letters — disappears with it.

Activity

Mail Plan Worksheet — name your primary address, a backup address or P.O. box, and a plan for checking mail weekly for your first 90 days.

Scenario

You fill out job applications with no mailing address. Employers, banks, and the DMV try to mail you important documents — they never reach you, and you don’t find out until it’s too late.

What would you do first?

Reflection

  1. How stable is the address you’re planning to use — really?
  2. What system will you use so important mail doesn’t get lost or opened by someone else?

My action plan (pick at least one)

  • Confirm your primary address with the person or program hosting it.
  • Set up a backup — P.O. box or program address — before you need one.
  • Write your address down in three places: on you, in your file, with a support contact.

Resources

  • U.S. Postal Service (USPS.com) — Change of Address and General Delivery options
  • Renewed Ambition front office — program mailing address for residents

Completion checklist

  • ☐ I have a stable mailing address and a backup.
  • ☐ The person hosting my address knows to expect my mail.
  • ☐ I have a system for checking mail at least once a week.

Milestone: A confirmed, stable mailing address is written into your release plan.
